Beauty Roadtest: IV Vitamin Facial.

vitamin-drip-facials-IV

I first heard about the Vitamin Drip Facials from a make-up artist friend in New York.

Everyone’s doing them” she said. “Genius, for jet-lag. I get all my girls to do it before a big red carpet appearance”.

And by ‘girls’ she means a couple of Oscar winners and a singer with more Grammy’s than MJ.

Then Kim Kardashian snapped about her treatment before the MET Gala and suddenly salons everywhere were adding the service to their spa menus.

Curious (of course) I was drawn to the highly recommended Duquessa Clinic that combines IV Vitamin with my great love Ominlux in specialised skin treatments.

This is almost a medical treatment – not a relaxing facial. You are in and out in forty minutes, twenty of which are monitoring time.

I noticed nothing initially other than the usual boost I get from red LED but the next day my skin was noticeably plumper. Seriously so. Which I guess makes sense – hydrated skin is plump skin.

I would absolutley do this treatment if I was getting married again – for sure – or ahead of any moment where you want to look fresh fast. Great after a long haul flight (which is when I did mine) for acclimating and dusting of the grey parlour of air travel.

The jury is out on whether there are long term benefits but it most definitely delivers a quick skin fix.

Q & A With Katherine Millar-Shannon, Cosmetic Nurse Practitioner.

What treatment did I have?

You had the Vita-Lite which contains an IV Vitamin C with 15gm of vitamin c in a saline bag, teamed with the OMNILUX Revive (red light). This worked to combine the benefits of Vitamins and LED Light Therapies to increase hydration, circulation and collagen for optimal skin health and well-being.

The treatment also offered antioxidant properties, with Vitamin C acting is a potent antioxidant that helps protect cell structures like collagen, proteins, and DNA from damage by free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are common in high stress states, chronic illness and infections..

Walk me through the procedure?

The first thing to do is ensure you have had a current blood test within the last 12 months, so you are aware of any underlying problems or issues. If you haven’t had a blood test in the past year, we will send you away to have one before administering the treatment.

On arrival we will give you a consent form which you are required to sign. It outlines the treatment and also addresses any possible side effects that can arise so you are fully informed. Our practitioner can talk you through any questions you have.

Your practitioner then completes standard client observations like your blood pressure, pulse rate and saturation of oxygen etc. This is to check you are in good health.

Then we begin the prescription, talking through any problems you are experiencing which might be treatable with IV Nutrition. A customised ‘cocktail’ of vitamins is developed and the IV is administered. This usually takes around half an hour.

Following the treatment you are observed for a short amount of time – we like you to have a drink, something to eat and also go to the bathroom, just to make sure everything is fine.

What are the benefits?

This service is great for stimulating collagen, while also putting a spring in your step.

Collagen is the structural protein found in all animal tissue. It holds our muscles to our bones, provides structural support for veins and arteries, and more.

Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis along with the amino acids proline and lysine. When you don’t have enough collagen, you may have thin skin and weaker blood vessels, bones, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to aneurysms (blood vessel wall thinning), possible stroke, and even the ruptured ligaments and tendons, commonly seen in sports injuries.

High doses of Vitamin C when administered by IV can bolster skin and connective tissue and prevent these outcomes.

What are the different benefits from the vitamin cocktails you prescribe?

We can create all kinds of cocktails to benefit the individual, but key IV Vitamin services we offer include:

Energy: A boost of energy from extra B12, B5 and B6 to get you through the week. Feel better doing your day-to-day activities without that wired feeling from adrenal fatigue.

Immunity: Armed with high doses of Vitamin C and Zinc this drip will have you feeling better in no time. It will shorten the duration of illness by attacking the problem not just the symptoms.

Anti-ageing: The ultimate combination of Vitamin C and Glutathione to plump and smooth your skin. Lightens and brightens and helps turn back time from the inside out!

Classic Myers: The vitamin cocktail that started it all! Just the right mix of vitamins and minerals for overall wellness. Great for maintenance and keeps our bodies in balance.

Personal Prescription: After a thorough consultation we will create a personal drip based on your lifestyle and well-being concerns.

Outline the benefits of the following delivered intravenously.

Vitamin B: IV administration results in higher rate of absorption and retention of B vitamins with faster and effective results. B complex vitamins promote immune system function, cell growth, metabolic function and nervous system function. Various characteristics of the individual such as energy levels, skin health, and muscle condition therefore depend on the consumption of adequate levels of B complex vitamins.

Vitamin B complex injection is prescribed by your practitioner and used by many individuals for an immediate boost in energy. These injections are most useful for fatigue caused due to nerve damage, diabetes, sciatica, tinnitus, effects of stress, chronic disease, B12 deficiency and a number of other conditions.

Vitamin B injections are mostly used by athletes, vegetarians and adults over the age of 40. Injections are costlier than tablets and gels but provide faster remedy.

Vitamin C: The power of Vitamin C on the skin is incredible, it helps to produce collagen, boosts skin cell rejuvenation and allows the skin to repair and hydrate. By infusing the Vitamin C directly via the IV-Vitamin Drip Therapy, the skin automatically reaps the benefits.

This can lead to aneurysms (blood vessel wall thinning), possible stroke, and even the ruptured ligaments and tendons commonly seen in sports injuries.

High doses of vitamin C when administered by IV can bolster skin and connective tissue and prevent these outcomes.

Magnesium: Magnesium improves sleep and endurance, while at the opposite end of the spectrum, health benefits of magnesium include improved energy and endurance. Both intravenous (IV) and injected magnesium have been successfully used to treat chronic fatigue, and we often give magnesium shots to patients complaining of low energy. These injections often result in significant increases in energy and vitality.

Magnesium aids those who suffer from migraines and headaches, helping to reduce their frequency and severity. Magnesium is also credited with helping muscle spasms, cramps or twitches and can also assist in relieving constipation and back pain.

Can IV improve energy levels?

Only about 18% of the vitamin C we consume is absorbed by our bodies. However, when it’s delivered by IV, vitamin C is 100% bioavailable. That means you can support your adrenal glands, maintain energy levels, improve and protect your skin, strengthen tendons and bones, boost your immune system with the power of high dose vitamin C.

High dose vitamin C is especially useful any time you are under greater than usual amounts of stress, feeling excessive fatigue, when your immune system needs bolstering to fight acute or chronic viral and bacterial infections, when your skin needs to be restored to glowing conditions such as after sun damage or surgery.

Vitamin C is required in the breakdown of fat for energy use. It takes part in the synthesis of a molecule called carnitine which serves as a shuttle bringing fats into the mitochondria in our cells for energy production. This means it can have a powerful influence on our energy levels. For example, a 2011 scientific study showed high dose (10 grams) vitamin C given by IV reduced fatigue in office workers after 2 hours and continued its effect for 24 hours

How many treatments do you need to have to see true results?

This depends on the individual but you could go as frequently as weekly for six weeks, monthly or instead look to do a quarterly boost. For some people even just a one off may benefit from the results, however, the IV drip are best when using an ongoing treatment plan

Who are good candidates for this treatment?

On a whole, those who are feeling run down, have lower immunity, experience skin conditions like acne and melasma, or need to rapidly hydrate skin are likely to see the most benefits from this service. We don’t treat pregnant women as they should be under the guidance of their obstetricians. You also need to be over 18 to have this treatment at Duquessa.

Who shouldn’t have the treatment?

You should not have this treatment if you have allergies to vitamin c, pernicious anemia, G6Pd clients (as is excreted renally), and it should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease.

You should always eat a proper meal before coming and make sure you are well hydrated as it can be difficult to work with veins when someone isn’t hydrated properly. You need to tell your practitioner if you have any skin irritations at all to be cautious of and also if you have any allergies. The more informed we are, the better we can ensure your experience is.

What are there risks?

Risks are generally minimal, however they can be in the form of infection, allergy, non-compliance, headache, nausea, and cramping post treatment. We talk you through all of these, but it is vital to stay hydrated and well-nourished with a healthy meal before and after if possible during the treatment.
