I Woke Up Like This.

I’m not a princess but when it comes to sleep I have always felt the pea.

You know the story: One stormy night a young woman drenched with rain seeks shelter in the prince’s castle. She claims to be a princess, so the prince’s mother decides to test their unexpected, unwitting guest by placing a pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by 20 mattresses and 20 feather-beds. In the morning, the guest tells her hosts that she endured a sleepless night, kept awake by something hard that she is certain has bruised her. The prince rejoices for only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel a pea through such a quantity of bedding.

I’m that girl. I feel the pea.

Every movement, every sound, every pea.

I have a tricky relationship with sleep and as I’ve gotten older getting good quality shut-eye has become harder and harder.

Last month, I decided to make some changes because lack of sleep was beginning to really affect my looks, my mood and my behaviour at work and at home.

First up, I made a few lifestyle tweaks:
Added a high daily dose of powered magnesium to help relax and relieve anxiety.

Total technology ban half and hour before lights out (and never leave the phone in the room)

Read a book before I turn the lights out until I feel truly sleepy.

Silk pyjamas and pillow slip (seriously huge difference)

No caffeine after lunchtime…

And Then I Changed My Bed.

This was the big one.

I had been sleeping on the same bed since I’d gotten married. Which is nineteen years. Fifteen of which have included children jumping, sleeping, playing on it.

My bed had had it. It was saggy, the springs had gone – every time my husband would roll over I would bounce into the air and wake up feeling achy and sore from the lack of support.

Enter SleepMaker Cocoon.

This is the style of bed that you find in hotel rooms and want to take home with you.

The type that gives you the best sleep of your life.

I’d heard about how good the Cocoon beds were – both my sisters have one – and when I went into store to try them out I was instantly hooked.

For me, it’s all about that cloud feeling. I need that from a bed – soft, dreamy, light.

Tick those boxes and I’m yours for life.

Why Its So Awesome.

I love my husband but he’s a wriggler and I’m a light sleeper. This matress is a miracle worker. Each spring sits separately within a Dreamfoam® core responds independently to movement which virtually removes all partner disturbance. Which for me has changed everything. I’m not getting woken up by the slightest movement. This bed is a light sleepers dream.

SleepMaker Cocoon mattress makers build each layer by hand to ensure every piece is perfect. Each bed is made to order with the highest quality materials, ensuring total comfort and a beautiful night’s sleep.

New pressure-relieving comfort layers provide a soft, luxurious feel without compromising therapeutic qualities. Choose the right firmness for your sleeping preference (I was the second softest) and you’ll find support exactly where you need it so you don’t wake with any aches and pains.

Silk and luxurious cashmere helps improve airflow and breathability within the mattress which in turn reduces allergens, improving the quality of your rest. Great if you have asthma or suffer from hay fever.

This bed has changed everything about sleeping for me.

My appearance (hellow fresher), my mood and productivity…I’m a better human because of this bed and I feel so silly for not making the change years earlier.

Beds are big ticket items but really when you break down the cost per use they are one of the cheapest and most important items in any house.

Good sleep is such a luxury and one we all deserve.

Hi Paula, Thanks so much for your recommendation. I am looking for a bed and l understand that you were probably paid for this post but its a lot of money to spend on an item so l really want to make sure you stand behind this item 100%.
I love your recommendations and try your judgement and l want to buy into the dream that is this bed but just checking its all its cracked up to be. Thanks Paula

  • Hi Cath
Thank you for your message and I completely understand the question.
My policy has always been to never write a negative review on my site. If I don’t like a product or believe in the brand then I simply pass on the opportunity or don’t mention them editorially. I wanted thejoye to be angst free space where you could shop and read safe in the knowledge that if it’s on the site then I either believe in it or use it myself.
As it happens, the Sleepmaker opportunity came when I was looking for a new bed – because of my sleep issues. Before I accepted the brief I tried a host of other beds and went through the process of choosing as a customer. I ended up choosing the Sleepmaker. I then trialled the bed for three weeks before I wrote about it. Beds are big ticket item but I have no problem at all in recommending this one. Hope that helps. PJxx

Thanks so much Paula. That absolutely does help. I knew you would be full of integrity but l needed to double check for myself. At the moment there are huge sales on them in Melbourne so it seemed like fate when you wrote about them. Thanks again Paula. I love you site and ready about your recommendations. Cath xx
